This year, 2024, both the UK and the US are gearing up for a round of national elections, where the two

and a bit party systems both sides of the pond are pitting a hawkish centrism against a right

wing party that's moving ever further to the right. I'm recording right now in

London and on this side of the Atlantic many pundits pundits are predicting a complete wipe out of a

fraught and sclerotic Tory party, saying that they are headed for electoral annihilation,

as the cost of living crisis spirals out of control

and the promise of a muscular economy renewed by Brexit

has completely failed to materialize.

Meanwhile in the United States

Donald Trump and Joe Biden are pretty much neck and neck in the polls.

Trump is currently mired in legal trouble and different conservative factions are squabbling for dominance,

for the right to define what republicanism looks like in a possible

second Trump term and beyond.

So as we face down these futures, we need to know who are these people and what they want.

In other words, what does transatlantic conservatism look like today and what are its prospects

as we trudged towards the polling stations this autumn.
