Summary

In this episode, we will talk about the diagnosis of narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). We will analyse the nine traits determined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) to diagnose the narcissistic disorder.

We will also talk about covert narcissists, the difficulties with getting a diagnosis and how it impacts the victims of abuse, and the issues with medicalising NPD.

As narcissists would rarely recognise they have a problem, getting a diagnosis becomes almost impossible. This adds pressure to their victims who are looking for help, and that is why we need to be careful when we hear that someone is a narcissist, and be ready to listen to the victims.

0:40.5	the diagnosis of NPD because narcissistic personality disorder as listed in the DSM, which is the
0:48.9	diagnostical and statistical manual, you've got to get your teeth in for all of that, I can tell you,

0:54.8	book that mental health professionals use to diagnose mental health disorders. And narcissistic
1:02.4	personality disorder is in there, along with nine other personality disorders and narcissistic
1:07.9	personality disorder is a cluster B personality disorder. And to be diagnosed with
1:12.2	NPD, there are nine traits that are listed in the DSM and you have to have five or more to be
1:18.1	diagnosed then as having NPD. Now, the problem obviously, because we've medicalized narcissistic
1:23.9	personality disorder is really the fact that it takes somebody thinking there's something
1:29.8	wrong with them to then go, hey, I think I may have got abusive behavior or narcissistic traits.
1:37.3	Maybe I am a narcissist. I need to go and get a diagnosis. Now, how many of you listening
1:42.6	have tried to maybe say to the narcissist in your life,
1:46.2	hey, I think you're a narcissist and they have literally shut you down. Or very often they'll go,
1:51.4	I'm not the narcissist, you're the narcissist. Can you relate to that? So it's very difficult when
1:57.0	we medicalize narcissistic personality disorder because to actually get a diagnosis means
2:03.1	we have to have a narcissist that knowledge that there's that subjective distress and actually go
