Out of all the cartridges we talk about here on the podcast, over the years the one that has proven to be the most consistently popular is the 280-Acli improved.

Today I've got my old friend Ron Spomer here with me who was probably partly to blame for my love of the 280 athlete because he started using it long before I did long before the cartridge was an official Sammy Specked cartridge.

So first, thanks for coming back on the show here, Ron.

Awesome. Yeah, I remember when P. O'ACley and I designed this oh

I thought never mind we're not gonna follow that too deep. When did you start using it? I don't remember if it was

92 or 95 but I was in the throes of my sheep hunting and Lex Weberneck

offered to build a rifle because he was making these incredibly lightweight

mountain rifles with longer barrels.

At that time you were getting abbreviated barrels

to shave some weight off.

Sure.

Carver a few holes here and there

and put a lighter stock on and stuff.

But Lex took it to the nth degree and he cranked out a rifle

that was weighing less than five pounds with or without scope without scope.

Without scope. Okay. When I get it all feel ready and loaded up with a sling on it and magazine loaded I'm just under six pounds

But wow he said Ron I think you should get it in a 280 acting improved

Okay, I said yeah, I've been hearing a little bit about that I was familiar with

acly cartridges and everything and I thought that would be kind of fun especially when

he offered to provide the ammunition initially oh yeah would by some guys and I could keep reloading it.

But it's really easy to take a 280 rim each and shoot it in the same.
