It was the summer of 1984, and residents of California were slogging through a brutal heat wave. Despite the scorching temperatures,

the energy across the state was high. Los Angeles was front and center on the global stage,

serving as the backdrop to the 1984 Summer Olympics. The international attention put even more

pressure on city officials to clean up the streets.

Nevertheless, many residents already lived life with unlocked doors and open windows.

But little did they know, there was a devil loose within the city of angels,

a killer who brought hell upon the state of California.

That monster was Richard Ramirez, the nightstocker.

Breaking into homes indiscriminately, he raped and viciously attacked people of varying ages and creeds,

and murdered at least 13 people in California between 1984 and 1985.

Ramirez was no stranger to violence. He was raised in Texas by an abusive father,

and later grew close to a cousin who allegedly told stories and shared photos of violent acts he committed while serving in Vietnam.

At 15 years old, Ramirez witnessed that same cousin shoot and kill his second wife.

In 1982, at the age of 22, Ramirez moved to California.

He frequently moved between San Francisco and Los Angeles, committing thefts and burglaries
