Summary

On this episode of the Real Life Pharmacology podcast, I continue my coverage with the Top 200 Drugs Podcast. Here's the list of medications we will cover.

Lorazepam (Ativan) is a benzodiazepine well known for its anxiolytic and anti-seizure properties.

Phenazopyridine (Pyridium) is a urinary analgesic that can change the color of the urine to a reddish/orange color as one of its adverse effects.

Hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil) is a DMARD used in rheumatoid arthritis and Lupus. One highly testable and unique nugget to remember is that it can cause retinopathy.

Lidocaine patch (Lidoderm) is used topically to help with various types of pain including neuropathy and postherpetic neuralgia.

Diclofenac (Cataflam) is an NSAID used as an analgesic and anti-inflammatory. It can increase the risk of GI bleed, edema, renal failure, and thrombosis.

0:45.5	Brand name of this medication is Ativan.
0:48.3	This is classified as a benzodiazepine, kind of a broader class.
0:53.5	I guess you could consider it an anxiolytic.
0:56.6	Primary use is, as you could expect, use short term for anxiety, ideally short term. I've
1:04.8	definitely seen patients on it chronically. Other indications, alcohol withdrawal, seizures potentially.
1:13.6	You do see it in hospice patients a fair amount for agitation and anxiety.
1:20.6	Rarer conditions you may see it utilized for serotonin syndrome and neuroleptic malignant syndrome. Those are kind of two drug-induced states
1:31.2	where we could have some increase in anxiety and agitation there as well. So those are some of
1:37.7	the common uses or some of the situations where you may see this medication utilized.
1:43.7	One nice thing with lorazepam,
1:45.8	maybe compared to some of the other benzodiazepines, is it does have a ton of different
1:51.2	dosage forms. So we've got tablet formulations, we've got oral liquid formulations, we've got
1:59.7	injectable formulations. So've got injectable formulations.
