The first court hearing in Harvard's legal battle against the Trump administration is set for Monday.

At the center of the dispute is a sweeping $2.2 billion funding freeze imposed on Harvard by the administration,

after the school refused to submit to policy demands around DEI programs, anti-Semitism, and anti-Muslim bias crackdowns, and more.

Harvard argues the freeze violates its First Amendment rights.

It's the latest escalation in the clash over academic freedom, federal funding, and campus

oversight.

Harvard's president, Alan Garber, told NBC News what he thinks is at stake.

What's at risk is the excellence of higher education in the United States, and in particular,

the research mission, which played such a vital role in the U.S. economy and in the health

and well-being of the American people.

The Trump administration appears open to negotiations with Harvard, even after the lawsuit was filed.
