Alright vitamin D, very, very important in feeding your microbes. Your microbes are dependent

0:29.5

on the vitamin D that you either get from the sun. You take as a supplement or get from your food,

0:34.2

which by the way is almost next to impossible to get, unless you're consuming a lot of fatty fish.

0:39.7

But other than that, it's going to be really hard to get it from the food. And many people don't go

0:43.9

out in the sun as much, and so there's a lot of barriers in getting that vitamin D. And when you

0:49.1

feed the microbiome, they develop significantly in their diversity. So you can increase the

0:56.1

diversity of your microbes with feeding them fiber from vegetables, but you can also increase

1:01.2

the diversity from getting enough vitamin D, which is actually quite fascinating. There are

1:06.8

certain ratios of microbes that come out correct. If you have enough vitamin D, there are additional

1:12.8

microbes that will grow in the presence of vitamin D. In fact, these microbes are major butirate

1:18.0

producers. What is butirate? Butirate is the small chain fatty acid that helps improve your blood

1:24.4

sugars. It helps to feed the colon cells. It actually gives you energy when you produce this.

1:32.8

It actually supports insulin and keeping insulin more sensitive. And a lot of people have a problem

1:39.2

with that as well. These microbes that are dependent on vitamin D also help you make vitamin B. And so

1:45.9

they actually exchange the B vitamins. And they also give us B vitamins. And if they're not there

1:51.8

because you are deficient of vitamin D, then you can be deficient in the B vitamins as well.

1:57.9

And that can affect sleep. It can affect stress and your skin and all sorts of things.

2:04.4

Now, the great majority of the population has a subclinical deficiency of vitamin D, which means

2:11.0

that it may not even show up on your blood. It could be in the conversion from the inactive

2:16.8

vitamin D to the active vitamin D. But as far as an actual deficiency, 40 percent, at least 40 percent.
