About 2,600 foreigners have gone missing in Mexico in the past 15 years. In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast, we discuss two separate cases of foreigners who have gone missing in Mexico. Canadian man Malcom Madsen was a snowbird who enjoyed traveling to Mexico every year. Malcolm purchased a home near Puerto Vallarta for his girlfriend Marcela Acosta. In 2018, the couple were seen on CCTV enjoying a night out at a local bar. Marcela could be seen putting a substance into Malcom’s drink. Minutes later, they left the bar and Malcom was unsteady on his feet. He has not been seen since. Marcela and two accomplices have been sentenced to over 50 years in prison in relation to Malcom’s disappearance. Australian woman Tahnee Shanks had been living in Mexico for years in 2022. She and her husband Jorge had been having marriage problems, and she planned to return to Australia with their daughter Adelynn. The family decided to take one last vacation together. In May 2022, Adelynn was found wandering alone and barefoot outside a church in Cancun. Now, almost three years later, both Tahnee and Jorge remain missing. Is Jorge on the run after killing Tahnee or could they both have been murdered by the Mexican cartel? Timestamps: (5:50) - Tracey Nix Update (10:44) - Amy Lynn Bradley In March 1998, Amy Bradley boarded a Royal Caribbean cruise with her brother, mother and father, looking forward to some fun in the sun. The family enjoyed seeing Aruba and taking advantage of all that the ship had to offer including restaurants, bars and nightclubs. One night on their cruise, Amy and her brother Brad danced until the early morning hours at the nightclub on the ship. They went back to their cabin and Amy was seen asleep by her father just after 5am. When he woke up again at 6am, Amy was gone. 27 years later, Amy remains missing. The investigation into her disappearance has been criticized by her family as Royal Caribbean did not want to alarm other passengers on board. Over the years, there have been many reported sightings of Amy and it is feared that she has been trafficked and is being forced to work in the sex industry. Was Amy abducted and smuggled off the ship? Could she still be alive? Or did she fall overboard and drown? In 2009, Amie began dating a man named Gareth Pursehouse. After 18 months, things turned sour and they broke up. Except, Gareth could not accept the change. He was violent towards Amie and stalked her, forcing her to take out multiple protective orders. Amie managed to distance herself from Gareth over the following years. In January 2020, the two had a chance meeting at a public event that Amie was attending and Gareth was working at. This meeting caused Gareth to fly into a rage which terrified Amie. On Valentine’s Day 2020, Amie attended a burlesque show with her friends. Gareth waited until she left and he broke into her home. He lay in her bed and waited for. When Amie arrived home, she was brutally attacked by Gareth and he threw her off a balcony, leaving her to die. Gareth would go to trial for Amie’s murder and he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. There have also been some big updates in the ‘suicide’ of Ellen Greenberg. The medical examiner who originally titled Ellen’s death a suicide has now backtracked. When authorities arrived, they found her two children, aged 4 and 1, unresponsive. Both children were declared dead at the scene. When authorities first investigated, it was determined that Jessica had likely poisoned her children before making a superficial attempt to take her own life. Authorities initially believed this as empty medication bottles were found at the scene. This case is unfolding in the courts at the moment and we have since learned that Jessica actually smothered her children with a Lilo and Stitch blanket. Lacey Spears lived an unusual and tumultuous life. Growing up, she told stories about abuse, eating disorders and abortion. None of which have been proven to be true. Lacey gave birth to a son, Garnett, in 2014. She immediately made up lies about Garnett’s father and started documenting her sons ‘medical issues’ online. Lacey insisted that Garnett have a feeding tube placed because he was unable to tolerate standard feeding. Nurses were skeptical as they were able to feed the baby without any issues. When Garnett was five, he ended up being airlifted to hospital. His sodium levels were so high that a doctor confronted his mother about the situation. Garnett passed away days later and a police investigation began. Lacey was convicted of murdering her son by injecting him with ultra levels of sodium. Authorities believe she suffers from Munchausen syndrome by proxy. Poisoning murders are a very rare occurrence. This method accounts for just under one-half of one percent of murders. He was married to his high school sweetheart, Denise, and they had a beautiful daughter together. Mike was successful in his career and enjoyed many hobbies, including hunting. One early morning in December 2000, Mike allegedly took his boat and went hunting on Lake Seminole. Denise raised the alarm when he did not return by noon. The search for Mike began, and ran for months. One theory was that Mike had been injured in a boating accident, fallen overboard and drowned. It was expected that his remains would eventually surface in the lake. They didn’t. Just months after he disappeared, Denise petitioned to have Mike declared dead so that she could claim almost $2m in life insurance. A judge agreed, despite the usual waiting period in Florida for someone to be declared dead being five years. Five years after Mike vanished, Denise married his best friend (and life insurance salesman) Brian Winchester. Their marriage was tumultuous and would eventually end in divorce. After their marriage fell apart, the truth came out. Brian and Denise had been having an affair and they worked together to kill Mike. His remains were found in 2017. Skip the intro chat: (8:00) - Start Sometimes people get so caught up in their personal situations that they become overwhelmed. Financial pressures, marital difficulties and employment troubles can all contribute to life feeling out of control. In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast, we discuss two separate cases where men may have faked their own deaths in order to escape the lives they were living. In August 2024, Wisconsin man Ryan Borgwardt (44) told his wife of 20+ years that he was going kayaking. The couple have three children together. Ryan’s wife raised the alarm when he did not return. His overturned kayak and a life jacket were found floating in the lake. Authorities became so convinced that he was not in the lake, they started investigating other avenues. They discovered that Ryan got a new passport, purchased airline gift cards and had been communicating with a woman online in Uzbekistan. Ryan Flynn aka Ryan Roth has been accused of stealing thousands of dollars over the years - including from his own grandmother. Ryan was known to set up fake charities, raise funds and then dissolve the organizations to keep the money for himself. On January 20, Ryan’s motorbike, belongings and an apparent suicide note were found at the edge of a cliff in Uluwatu in Bali. She took the kids to McDonalds for breakfast and witnesses said the family seemed fine and nothing was amiss. Diane made another stop at a gas station looking for a specific over-the-counter pain medication, but the store didn't carry it. After this, Diane pulled over multiple times and was seen hunched over appearing sick outside of the vehicle. One of her nieces called their father and said, ‘There’s something wrong with Aunt Diane.’ Family members told Diane to stay where she was, but Diane continued the drive regardless. She drove the wrong way onto the busy Taconic State Parkway and struck another vehicle head-on at a high rate of speed. The crash became known as the worst fatal motor vehicle accident in Westchester County. 8 people were killed, including Diane, her daughter and all of her nieces. An empty bottle of vodka was found in the wreckage of the vehicle and Diane’s BAC was reported to be 0.19%. She also had high levels of THC in her system and was suspected to have smoked marijuana as recently as 15 minutes prior to the collision. Diane’s husband remains adamant that driving under the influence is not what caused the accident and believes Diane suffered a medical emergency. Join us on Patreon for exclusive, ad-free content. Timestamps (10:37) - Napa Halloween Murders Start Napa - California - On Halloween in 2004, three roommates, Leslie Ann Mazzara, Lauren Meanza and Adriane Insogna, spent the evening handing out specially prepared treat bags to the children in their neighborhood. Hours after the women went to bed, Lauren was awakened by the sounds of screaming and breaking glass. As she headed up the stairs to investigate, she heard footsteps coming towards her. She fled the home and called 911 from her vehicle. Leslie and Adriane would be found brutally murdered in an upstairs bedroom. The pool of blood at the scene was said to be inches deep. An investigation would later determine that an acquaintance of the women, Eric Copple, was responsible for their deaths. Eric was the partner of a friend of the girls. No motive for the murders has ever been confirmed, besides Eric’s possible jealousy over the friendship. Despite this case happening twenty years ago, it has recently been discussed again due to the similarities between it and the Moscow Murders. The true numbers are likely higher, given that these crimes are often missed for years. In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast, we discuss two different cases where nurses have been convicted of purposely murdering their patients with insulin. Pennsylvania nurse Heather Pressdee gave "lethal and potentially lethal doses of insulin" to at least 22 of her patients. Seventeen of the patients "died very soon" or "sometime later" after receiving the insulin doses. Heather ended up taking a plea deal to avoid the death penalty. In 2024, she was sentenced to three consecutive life sentences for the murders. She was also ordered to subsequently serve another 380 to 760 years in prison for the attempted murders. Australian nurse Megan Haines had many complaints made against her during her nursing career. It was alleged that she was rude to patients and that she stole from them. At one point, she had her nursing license suspended. Megan was reprimanded and was eventually allowed to nurse again. While working a night shift in May 2014, she was informed that three patients had made complaints against her and that she would be investigated. That night, Megan would inject two of the patients who complained about her with insulin. She was arrested and charged with the murders and is currently serving a prison term - she will be eligible for parole in 2041. Murder by poison is a rare method used by criminals. It is used in just under one-half of one percent of cases. In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast, we discuss three very different cases where people were intentionally poisoned, in an attempt to kill. Indiana man Alfred Ruf has just been jailed for drugging his wife Lisa multiple times. When Lisa was unconscious, Alfred would sleep with her daughter. Alfred told police that the end goal had been for Lisa to die. Texas attorney Mason Herring and his wife Catherine were having marital issues and decided to separate. Soon after, Catherine found out she was pregnant with their third child, so the couple decided to try to make things work. Mason decided to put an abortion drug into Catherine’s beverages, on repeated occasions. Catherine installed cameras in their home when she became suspicious after falling ill. Mason was eventually sentenced to a measly 180 days in jail after pleading guilty to charges of injury to a child and assault of a pregnant person. The couple’s daughter was born 10 weeks premature and now attends therapy 8 times per week and she has developmental delays. Lana Clayton was millionaire Steven Clayton’s 7th wife. In 2018, Lana apparently found Steven laying at the bottom of a staircase. She ran outside and flagged down a motorist to ask for help. Lana initially refused an autopsy for Steven and also told his family that he had no will, which not surprisingly, made them suspicious. An autopsy was eventually carried out and it was discovered that Lana had poisoned Steven by putting eye drops into his coffee. She is also said to have thrown his phone into a lake so that he could not call for help following the poisoning. Lana pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and tampering with a food or a drug causing death. She was sentenced to 25 years in prison without parole. From the outside, the couple appeared to have a picture-perfect life. Under the surface though, cracks were forming. From early on in their marriage, Scott had a number of affairs with other women. In November 2002, he began an affair with a woman named Amber Frey. He told Amber at one point that he had ‘lost his wife’ and the upcoming Christmas would be his first without her. On Christmas Eve 2002, Laci was around 8 months pregnant. Scott said he left her at home watching Martha Stewart and that she was gone when he returned. The search for Laci and her unborn son was one of the most extensive and high-profile ever seen. Laci and Conner’s remains would be found months after they vanished. In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast, we discuss two cases where children died after being left unattended in the heat. Justin ‘Ross’ Harris and his wife Leanna had been having marriage troubles for years. They were trying to stick it out, despite Ross’ having numerous affairs. The couple had one child together, Cooper. In June 2014, Ross texted one of the women he had been seeing and said "I need an escape. I love my son and all but we both need an escape.” Later that day, Ross took Cooper to breakfast and was meant to drop him off to daycare. After driving for a mile, Ross somehow forgot that Cooper was in his car seat. Ross parked the car in direct sunlight, got out of the vehicle and went into work. Seven hours later, after internal temperatures in the car reached around 125f, Ross left work and drove off. Minutes later, he realized what he had done. Cooper was dead in his car seat. Ross was charged with malice murder, two counts of felony murder, cruelty to children in the first and second degree, criminal attempt to commit a felony and dissemination of harmful materials to minors. Many of these charges stemmed from Ross’ inappropriate communications with underage females that he engaged in sexting with. Ross was convicted in 2016. He was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole plus 32 years. However, in 2024, Ross was released from prison. A court ruled that there should have been separate trials for the murder charges and the sex-crime charges and his convictions were overturned. Timestamps: (7:54) - Karen Read Update (18:00) - Wade Wilson In October 2019, Kristine Melton and Diane Ruiz each made innocent choices that would lead to the end of their lives. Kristine and a friend, Stephanie, went to a bar to listen to live music. At the venue, they met Wade Wilson. Stephanie described Wade as ‘friendly and charming.’ Kristine and Wade went back to Kristine’s where Wade strangled Kristine in her bed. He then stole her vehicle and fled the scene. Later that day, while driving the stolen car, Wade approached Diane who was walking to work. He asked her for directions and he enticed her into the vehicle. He then beat and strangled Diane before pushing her out of the car and running her over until she looked like ‘spaghetti.’ Wade is now facing the death penalty for the murders and is due to be sentenced. She dealt with bullying at school that would eventually escalate into one the most heinous murders in the state. In January 1992, four girls between the ages of 15-17 decided "to teach Shanda a lesson." One of the girls, Melinda Loveless, was jealous of Shanda's new relationship. The girls went to Shanda’s home late at night and convinced her to leave with them. Over the next several hours, they would torture, sexually assault and beat Shanda to the brink of death before setting her on fire with gasoline. They left her to die on the side of a road. After the murder, the girls went to McDonald's and giggled because their breakfast sausages reminded them of Shanda's burnt body. He was only wearing mismatched shoes.Noah’s cause of death has been confirmed as blunt force injuries and the manner of death remains undetermined.
