The submission read ‘Don’t know how to phrase this properly but Saoirse Ronan on the Graham Norton show and the problem with even the ‘nice guys’ not getting it/how women are always on edge’. So, I have condensed that to 'insidious misogyny', which I hope works! This conversation is two-fold, both about what happened on that literal couch, and the parasocial relationships we have with celebrities which mean we can sometimes give tiny viral moments, way too much airtime, and secondly. what this represents more broadly, at a time when gendered and sexual violence against women feels to be at an all-time high. The submission read: Blake Lively/ women being piled on / cancelled on the internet. Whilst this conversation was initially about the two camps of support for either Justin Baldoni or Blake Lively, after the press fallout from the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s mega sell out It Ends With Us, it was also about the way famous women are built up only to be torn down. Anne Hathaway, J Lo, Cara Delevingne, Jennifer Lawrence just to name a few, have over the past decade, fallen in and out of favour for sometimes indefinable reasons. I had so many messages on this, perhaps this shows we are more interrogative of what content we are being fed, and how easy it is to be manipulated by media, as opposed to instances in the past when everyone turned against Keira Knightley or Julia Roberts and everyone kinda just accepted that they loved to hate with little introspection as to why. The submission read: The feeling of a well-lived summer being underwhelming each year, and feeling disappointed. I was actually quite surprised that this one beat babies, they were tying for a long while, but I personally really understood the sentiment of this submission. I read this to mean, that we put so much store in summer, there is so much lore around the season, it’s the fun sexy season where nothing is off limits and the nights are long and the possibilities are endless, but perhaps as we get older, the nostalgia for that freedom we associate with summer is stronger than the truth of it, so we’re left wanting and bereft. Where to start… well I guess the first thing to say is 99.9% of the messages were from women, and women are my main demographic, but also all of the submissions were about heterosexual relationships… more than happy to talk about queer love in another episode, it just didn’t come up this time. To get involved, follow me on Instagram @oenone, where every Tuesday we vote on a topic and every Wednesday we dig deep. Let’s Talk About… far right attacks. The submission read: Far Right Attacks, where do we go from here? I am recording this on Thursday afternoon the day after lots of racist, Islamophobic, fascist riots were planned, but in a bittersweet turn of events we saw anti-fascist and anti-racist counter protestors turn up in their thousands and basically block the areas that were said to be targeted. It made me feel very proud of our city and Bristol and Brighton, Newcastle, Nottingham and all of the other places that showed solidarity, however perhaps we, as that silent majority, need to be less silent, show up more, and do more in general to make sure everyone in the UK feels safe and welcome. Again, I wanted to put a trigger warning here to say that there will be messages about racism and the ongoing rise in fascism and if that is too upsetting or distressing then please do switch off now. As we know three little girls Bebe King, six, Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, and Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, were murdered at a Taylor Swift themed party, and fuelled by disinformation about the murderer, this horrific tragedy was seized upon by the racists and fascists to bring violence and rioting to Southport, targeting mosques and minority groups, this has now spiralled into fear for so many with the rise of far right and islamophic propaganda spreading like wildfire especially on social media. For this conversation we focussed on the feeling and general environment in the wake of these events as well as talking about where it has come from and what we can do. This is an extremely sensitive subject but I do believe it’s important we talk about it. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

I received so many messages about parental loss, grief, being a carer, dealing with terminal illness, and so if any of those subjects are too close to home or may be too upsetting this episode might not be for you. Although despite the very difficult subject matter, so many of you expressed how much of a relief it is to actually talk about grief and loss in a culture that has a strange and fractured relationship with death. So many of us don’t really know what to say or how to talk about it, which is why I was so grateful that so many of you were so generous with your own experiences. At the end we speak about identity politics and how our attitudes towards it and the ‘privilege’ discourse are changing, which I personally think is quite an interesting topic. Hey Podulters! We made it to 100 episodes, I can't quite believe it. That's over 6018 minutes (I could be wrong here, but I tried to add it up), and so so close to 4 million downloads. To celebrate this, I thought I would do a solo episode about what I've learnt doing this podcast over the past three years. It took me a few goes (APOLOGIES FOR THE DELAY), but hopefully this one sort of encapsulates just how transformative this podcast has been for me. I am sure there are a million things I have forgotten to mention, but 100 episodes is a lot! Hey Podulters! In this week’s episode I speak to Rutger Bregman, he is a historian, author and speaker. I’m sure if you listen to the podcast regularly you will have heard me mention his book, Utopia For Realists, multiple times. Unlike pretty much anyone else I have spoken to, Rutger said he was pretty happy with everything he had learnt in school 🤣 but that’s mostly because he doesn’t really think our schools are fit for purpose as they are. We discuss following your intuition, the importance of diverse communities and why humans are actually really kind, deep down. I really enjoyed recording this episode and I hope you enjoy listening, Rutger’s latest book, Humankind, covers a lot of what we talk about in the episode! Hey Podulters, I hope you’re well! In this week's episode I speak to the politics editor at gal-dem, Moya Lothian-McLean. We discuss which three things she wishes she had been taught in school, namely political philosophy, addiction and achievement myths. We talk a lot about social media, and the way that online discourse often dominates our perception of world events and compels us to form opinions on everything all the time, perhaps to our detriment. We also speak about fitness addiction, body image and dieting - so content warning for that. Hello Podulters, It’s been a very long time no speak🥲. I’m so pleased to be back with season 10 👀of Adulting! Wow! It was the three year anniversary of the podcast the other day, and it’s so exciting to see how far we’ve come. In fact, I think today’s conversation with Matt Haig is quite reflective of that. We start to push back a little against the pervasive and negative aspects of ‘woke culture’ - for want of a better phrase - and that’s looking like a recurring theme this season. This is interesting to me, because of course Adulting as a podcast is all about becoming more knowledgeable, more understanding and less ignorant. But I do wonder if maybe we have lost sight of that goal more broadly, especially when using the term 'woke'? I’m still asking people what three things they wish they had been taught in school, and Matt’s are Philosophy, coping with adversity and self acceptance. His book, The Midnight Library, which I absolutely loved, is now out in paperback... incase you were looking for your next read. I really hope you enjoy listening and I’m so glad to be back! Hey Podulters, I hope you're well! This special bonus episode of Adulting is sponsored by Oatly, my absolute favourite dairy alternative drink! As this is a special episode, we also have a special guest; Namely, my dad. He is a consultant cardiologist, car enthusiast and very amateur rugby player. We discuss the impact of food on the climate crisis, what his relationship with food was like when he was younger and the generational differences between him and I, when it comes to attitudes towards sustainability. This was so much fun to record and I think I learnt more from my dad than he did from me! I hope you enjoy :) If you want to get chatting to your dad - or any family member for that matter - about making sustainable swaps, visit oatly.com/helpdad. Hosted on Acast. I speak to Nadia Whittome, Labour mp for Nottingham East who also happened to become the youngest MP at 23, in 2019. We discuss the three things she wishes she had been taught in school, namely, being taught in a way that she learns, a fuller curriculum; including black history, the climate crisis and trade unionism, as well as how to cook properly. I really hope you enjoy, and as always thank you so much for listening x Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
